Building the practice at Springload

Springload’s mission is to make the things that matter better. Their goal is to create intuitive People-Driven Experiences, therefore driving the development of the human centered design practice. Over time we have shaped and developed the practice to bring it into its place today. We’ve developed our principles for how we work, research ops, a code of ethics, method cards across research, design and content all framed by the British double diamond.

As the need to develop solutions that have a te ao Māori focus has developed, we have started to fold in a kaupapa Māori approach to our mahi, therefore moving away from the traditional double diamond approach. This approach is driving a more strategic, story based and creative way of exploring problems.

Below outlines the process for developing our practice and the elements we have worked on over time.

On this mahi I led the framework and approach for the process design, developed our own project principles, double diamond and templates for method cards.

Studying proces

To build the framework for the practice at Springload we explored other frameworks and methodologies made by agencies across the globe, including Isobar’s Design Language (see above). Unlike Isobar though, Springload needed a methodology that could span across multiple disciplines beyond design.

Building practice

To define the practice we went with a set of principles, a version of the British Double Diamond and a set of methods. The double diamond provided framework that our team could easily connect with and a structure for our standard phases. Each phase could have any number of methods creating something that had the flexibility to cover all of the different projects and the structure to provide some consistency. We mainly used these documents in our pitch to clients, providing them with confidence in our approach and delivery.

Today our now called “Activity cards” live in Manawa, our internal Notion resource.
